It was designed by New York architect John Norris and built in 1850 for cotton merchant Charles Green. At a cost of $93,000, this Gothic Revival wonder (featuring a crenellated roof and a porch embellished with filigree ironwork) is an amazing confection of a building. Much of the material for the construction was brought over from England as ballast on Mr. Green’s trading vessels, demonstrating some of the canny planning that helped him became rich enough to afford this mansion. The inside is also opulently decorated with mantels of marble, including 2 in the drawing room of Carrara, carved black-walnut woodwork, and doorknobs and hinges of either silver plate or porcelain.
