Description
Green-Meldrim House
It was designed by New York architect John Norris and built in 1850 for cotton merchant Charles Green. At a cost of $93,000, this Gothic Revival wonder (featuring a crenellated roof and a porch embellished with filigree ironwork) is an amazing confection of a building. Much of the material for the construction was brought over from England as ballast on Mr. Green’s trading vessels, demonstrating some of the canny planning that helped him became rich enough to afford this mansion. The inside is also opulently decorated with mantels of marble, including 2 in the drawing room of Carrara, carved black-walnut woodwork, and doorknobs and hinges of either silver plate or porcelain.
Martha Summerell passed on the information that the lower (gothic) part of the gate and fencing are original to the house.
It was General William Tecumseh Sherman's personal headquarters during the 1864 occupation of Savannah. It was from here the general had the nerve to send President Lincoln a telegram offering the president the city of Savannah as a Christmas gift.
The house changed hands in 1892 to Judge Peter Meldrim, who added the upper section to the gate and fence. The building was later sold by his heirs to St. John's Episcopal Church to use as a parish house.
