Description
These gentlemen must have been hoping for a peaceful break when they went to the officers' club on base in San Diego. Little did they know that ASAA (American Society of Aviation Artists) had invaded the club that evening. I was taken by their obvious camaraderie, and asked if they'd mind if I painted them.
The autographs are due to a peculiarity of collectors of aviation art. They like to get the signatures of participants in a mission on prints. I thought it would be fun to treat this as a 'mission', and all four graciously complied, included the patches, and, Captain Mike Kelly provided the set of Professional Aviation Maintenance Officer Wings and this comment: it is "their chosen career field that binds the four of them together professionally".
The following year, This painting was juried into the ASAA show in Pensacola, FL as part of an art exhibit celebrating the 100th anniversary of naval aviation.
This bar was the model for the one in the "Mustang" movie.

I've spent many an hour bellied up to that very bar, singing bawdy songs with my brothers.

A print of this was hung on the wall right behind this location...although I hear the I had has been remodeled...not sure if it's still there.
