I had been extremely near-sighted all my life. I was unable to wear contact lens.
As a child, I had read about a procedure for correcting this, in an experimental stage. Every appointment after, for decades, I asked my ophthalmologists or optometrists if it was possible yet. My eyes were -12 and -12.5 diopters.
In 1996, I became one of the first 5000 to get it done, 3 years before FDA approval.
As an artist, I was nervous as to how it would affect creating artwork, as it certainly would be a game change. No more working with my nose almost in the paint!
I decided to create this self-portrait to document the journey. It incorporates computer models from before and after surgery; a background which progresses from vision prior to Lasik without glasses to post surgery; and incudes a pair of my former eyeglasses.
Despite minor side effects with nighttime glare, 25 years later, I have no regrets.
I am just an old grandmother soul that has been creating since I first got a chubby baby fist on a crayon. For decades, I have worked in a variety of media, in many sizes, and in several themes. Some may reoccur and occasionally mingle with others. My artwork sprawls from impressionist over to, but never reaching, absolute realism. It reflects my life, mental state and interests. I adore dramatic color and very often lean towards a blue/orange dynamic. Skies are rarely calm, buildings should look old and lived in, and people should make you wish you could meet them.
