Description
I had been extremely near-sighted all my life. I was unable to wear contact lens.
As a child, I had read about a procedure for correcting this, in an experimental stage. Every appointment after, for decades, I asked my ophthalmologists or optometrists if it was possible yet. My eyes were -12 and -12.5 diopters.
In 1996, I became one of the first 5000 to get it done, 3 years before FDA approval.
As an artist, I was nervous as to how it would affect creating artwork, as it certainly would be a game change. No more working with my nose almost in the paint!
I decided to create this self-portrait to document the journey. It incorporates computer models from before and after surgery; a background which progresses from vision prior to Lasik without glasses to post surgery; and incudes a pair of my former eyeglasses.
Despite minor side effects with nighttime glare, 25 years later, I have no regrets.
