Description
It's hard to believe this unassuming little gothic church in humid, sultry Savannah, Georgia is where the quintessent holiday song "Jingle Bells" was written (but not at this location!).
The church was originally built on Oglethorpe Square, in 1851 for a Unitarian congregation. James Pierpont Jr. was the organist, his brother was the minister.
It was sold to the Episcopal Diocese, who gave it to the freed slaves who had to move it to its current location at Troop Square, and they formed the first African Episcopal parish in Georgia.
It went back to the Unitarians in 1997.
There is a fascinating history to its congregations over the years and its reason for moving.
I will also post a version of this watercolor with an insert of the historic marker.

Beautiful shadows, details and colors, and I enjoyed reading the history behind the painting.
