Hibiscus and Hummingbird Gate

Merana Cadorette
Medium
Painting - Watercolor
Description
One of the gates featured in my book "Gates of Savannah" (History Press).
The residence was built by Henri Hermann, 1861. The gate is yet another of John Smith’s
marvelous natural creations, commissioned along with a rear gate by Mr. and Mrs. William
Bradley about 20 years ago.
This has a silly story about what can happen if an artist relies too much on photographs, I
take digital images to work from, but frequently go back to check up and sketch elusive
details. In this case, the reference shot I used showed a mere outline of the pots and
shadows of a round orbs towards the tops due to the strong light and shadow. My best
guess from this was a tiki carving. Knowing that had to be wrong, I went back and found the ‘eyes’ were radishes or turnips, and the nose and nostrils was a rabbit’s head and eyes.
